At least I wasn't asked What's In It! LOL

Photobucket

Just what's on it. Whew! My friend Andie tagged me for this almost a week ago & I'm just now getting around to it. Sorry Andie!

So here's mine:

You can click on the image to get a better look; if you dare! LOL Yes, there is a refrigerator under all of that stuff.... at least I think so. ; )

There are pictures both of my youngest girlies, 1 grandson and a very dear friend and her family from a few years back. Notes from my 7 yo. Magnets from various places we have been. Dental reminders. Buisness magnets from, the ped, dentist, insurnce companies (including one from DS's job which I don't know why it's still there. He isn't!), numbers to replace the worn out ones on the mailbox before we rent out this house. And of course my Monster Dry Erase Calendar that I could not live without. It was actually bigger but I had to cut off the memo part in order to make it fit on the fridge.

What? Boycotting Girl Scout Cookies?

My dear friend Andie made sure I saw her blog post by emailing it to me. My reply to it got so long I decided I really had ought to just blog it myself. So here is a copy of the article she posted followed by my own comments.

Have Groups That Plan Boycott of Girl Scout Cookies Gone Too Far?
George Edward

Who can resist buying cookies from girl scouts? The kids are cute, the charity is real and the cookies are just too good! Unfortunately, that's the problem. The cookies may be WAY too good and certain groups are calling for a boycott - or perhaps a girl-cot? - of cookie sales this year due to the rising obesity weight of US adults and children alike.

According to studies, nearly 20 percent of young children (ages 6-11) are overweight and that number seems to be on the rise. In fact, there was a story recently reported about an 8 year old boy in London who weighs over 200 pounds and authorities are threatening to take him away from his parents because of it. Granted, this little (well, I guess not so little) Londoner probably didn't get that way eating US girl scout cookies, but you get the point. We continually hear about our youth getting fatter and fatter due to lack of exercise and bad food choices. But will boycotting Girl Scout cookies really make a difference?

Maybe so. Activist groups have reported that nearly two thirds of fund raisers, such as the girl scout cookie drive, used baked goods to make their money. They seem to be saying that there might be a better way for these groups to make money and not contribute to Americans' increasing waist lines. Being that the cookie drive is one of the biggest drives in the country; a boycott would send a big message. Yet, the spring cookie drive is also an anticipated event for many. In its 90th year, it's about as American as apple pie, although I'd bet some would want to boycott that as well. I count down the days until my Somoas and Thin Mints arrive and usually purchase several boxes to hoard during the months that follow.

Perhaps we should all try a little harder and just buy a couple boxes instead of filling our trunks with these incredibly tasty treats. Perhaps moderation really is the key. Perhaps we should skip the Somoas and purchase some of the other "reduced fat" cookies the scouts now sell. I’m sorry, but I must say no. I'd like to buy into it, but I just can't. I’ll cut back on other things. Now, how many more days until they get here?

You can not blame makers of edible products for an individuals indulgence or rather over indulgence in them! Just because they make them doesn't mean A) that you have to eat them or B) that you should gorge yourself on them. In regards to childrens eating habits... who trains them? Of course if they are left to their own devices they will go for the junk. It is the parents job to teach them healthy eating habits and to see to it they get enough exercise. Surely no parent is going to give a child a whole box of Girl Scout cookies and say "Here honey, you go eat this while you sit on your bottom and watch tv for the rest of the afternoon." and if by chance there is a parent out there that does is it really the Girl Scouts fault? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!

I admit I bought a bunch of cookies last year. Way more than I should have, that's for sure!!! But guess what? I STILL HAVE THEM!!! We did not gorge ourselves on them even though I personally adore Thin Mints, my husband loves the Samoas and the Tag Alongs and the girls seem partial to the Do Si Dos. I bought them mostly to support my daughters troop. While I still want to support them again this year I did limit myself to only buying a few of the new Lemon Chalets and about cried when I saw the serving size was only 1 cookie.

What on Earth is the purpose of boycotting the Girl Scout Cookie Sales? It seems their point is to keep cookies out of the homes of overweight children. Guess what? There are alot more cookies to be had out there that don't support a good cause like Girl Scouting and for alot less money so therefore they could buy (and eat) more of them.

If you want to blame food products waht about McDonalds (and the like) or the Soda industry? I bet these same people drink diet soda thinking they are doing a good thing by avoiding the sugars. If they only knew what they were really doing to their bodies with all that aspartane they'd be on a new cause and one (IMHO) better rallied against! But I digress.

Please go to this link and read for yourselves what selling Girl Scout cookies does for the girls in scouting. I have a grown daughter that was a Girl Scout, my 7 yo is a Brownie and next year my youngest daughter will be old enough to join Girl Scouts as well. I am a Girl Scout leader as well and see first hand what these girls gain from Girl Scouting.

Everything in moderation! Eat Responsibly! : )
